Use the tape measure to measure 13 inches from one end of the board and make a mark, then measure another 13 inches from that mark and make another mark. Another 13 inches and a third mark will give you three 13-inch segments. 2. Line up the edge of the combination square (or tri square) with the first mark, holding the handle of the square firmly against the side of the board. 3. Draw a line along the square. Repeat at the two other marks. 4. The marked-up wood will look like this, ready for sawing.
Using the square, draw lines at the marks at both ends of the board. 40. Use the power miter saw to cut off the excess length so your cutting board is exactly 12 inches long. The blade should easily cut through the dried glue. 41. Next, you’ll need to round off the corners of the board. With a quarter and a pencil, draw an arc on each of the corners. Each arc should be of the same length. You can determine this by measuring the distance from the corner of the board to the point where the arc intersects the side.
64. You will complete the cutting board by applying two or three coats of a non-toxic finish, such as the Salad Bowl Finish by Mohawk used here. 65. Wipe the finish onto the board using a clean, lint-free cloth. It’s best to wear gloves when applying any finish. 66. Make certain you cover the board’s edges and the inside of the groove. Allow each coat of finish to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat. The label of the finish you use will specify drying time. 67. Thin strips of scrap wood will keep the freshly finished board up off the work surface so it can dry completely without sticking.
