Cut the branches so they are more or less the same length. They don’t have to be exactly the same, but it looks nice if they have a uniform appearance. Slice the bark off one end of each stick. Leave enough clean wood to hold a marshmallow, a vegetable slice, or anything else you might be skewering. Taper and sharpen the point. Round the opposite end of each stick, forming the handle. Beech: I’ve found that beech can be a bit brittle, but if you’re careful, it works fine. Oak: There are many varieties of oak, and some are much better than others for certain projects. I’ve made some nice pieces from pin oak, live oak, and water oak. Red oak is not particularly good for most of these projects, because it tends to have a very open grain that’s kind of wavy.
Firewood Hardwoods like birch, maple, and oak are perfect for making a bed of hot coals, which can be used to roast marshmallows or cook corn or potatoes wrapped in foil. If you have some wood left over after you finish all your whittling projects, you might want to celebrate with a fire and some good food.
